Family Cruising on Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Breakaway has five waterslides, including The Plunge - fastest slide at sea!

The years you watch your children grow up are precious and fleeting.

Maybe you are looking for a family vacation right now and just can't find something with appeal to everyone; especially if you have kids of various ages, like toddlers and teens together.

We all strive to give our kids the best childhood memories possible; we want our vacations to be unforgettable with experiences that imbue our kids with new social skills, provide cultural opportunities, create fond memories and tighten the family bonds.

What we don't want is anyone feeling short-changed or under-appreciated, and by that same token we also deserve a good vacation for ourselves. After all, aren't we the one making the whole thing possible?

Examine the Possibilities

Considering all of the possible choices; it's really hard to find a vacation with appeal to every family member. For example, maybe all kids love theme parks, but they love them in different ways. If your kids are different ages then even theme parks can cause familial friction, especially for the parents only trying to do something special.

Beach houses "at the shore" are a popular choice, but you still have to find and hire baby sitters if you want adult time. There are car trips to visit relatives that leave you feeling like you never left home. There are flights to places of culture, but children get bored in hotels and can be moody and demanding on adult-focused tours.

Bottom line - there is always a perfect vacation for one person, but there are very few vacations that are "truly perfect for everyone." And there is a good reason why this is true; because it takes a lot of time and effort to create a vacation that has appeal for every member of a family.

Is the Perfect Family Vacation Possible?

This is where Norwegian Cruise Line comes in. When most people hear "family vacation" they think of theme parks, but do theme parks offer certified baby-sitting with nap time during your dinner hour? No, but Norwegian Cruise Line does. Does the Hilton have professionally trained supervisors to keep your teens amused while you sit by the pool? No, but Norwegian Cruise Line does; all that and more.

Norwegian has supervised age appropriate activities with professionally certified youth coordinators available, but not mandatory, for every child between the ages of six months to 17 years - throughout every day of your cruise. You can have "family time" or you can have time alone any waking hour of the day.

Best of all - the kids will be happy either way, because the activities the ship has planned for them are proven to be fun - no matter what age group your kids fit in.

Onboard Programs Just for Kids

Just last year Norwegian Cruise Line completely revamped their fleet-wide children's programs to make them the best yet. A contest for the kids and teens who have sailed with Norwegian was held to choose the new names; "Splash Academy" for the kids and "Entourage" for the teens.

Splash Academy offers specialized activities with proven appeal in separate programs for various age groups as follows:

Guppies: 6 mo. - 2 yrs. (at least one parent must remain with the child)
Turtles: 3 - 5 yrs.
Seals: 6 - 9 yrs.
Dolphins: 10 - 12 yrs.

All of the daily activities are designed for fun and enhancing skills for interacting with other kids. Making pizza, baking cupcakes, creative arts such as theater and circus workshops and organized sports fill the bill. All activities are supervised by Norwegian's Youth Counselors, with degrees in child care or sports education.

On select Norwegian ships, kids have the opportunity to cruise with their favorite Nickelodeon characters, through Norwegian's exclusive partnership with the #1 entertainment brand for kids. For a crazy good time the all-new Pajama Jam Character Breakfast features Dora, SpongeBob and other Nickelodeon celebrities. Guests, encouraged to wear their pajamas to the Spinnaker Lounge, get a goody bag filled with items to use during the interactive morning meal. The pajama-clad Team Nick sings and dances while families enjoy breakfast and every child gets a complimentary, keepsake photograph.

Nickelodeon programs vary depending upon which Norwegian ship you sail upon, (Check: http://www.ncl.com/freestyle-cruise/nickelodeon for all of the Nickelodeon details). But all of the kids programs are guaranteed to engage active and creative kids. Even the tots get special attention with play classes like parent and baby "Rhyme Time," and artistic sensory hands-on fun featuring "Wee Can Too" organic art products for tots and babies.

Onboard Programs for Teens

We all know teenagers can get moody, but the special teens-only program "Entourage," will have them dancing with boys or girls from around the world, on their own private dance floor with all the lighting and sound effects of a real nightclub. There are nighttime pool parties with air guitar competitions, karaoke, dance-offs and even a scary movie night that turns into a vampire party.

Shared Family Activities

Although your kids will have plenty to keep them occupied while you enjoy your vacation, this is still a family cruise which means experiences for everyone to share.

Kids, teens and families can all compete in various bowling tournaments and dodge ball contests in the sports complexes featured on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

Dinner is also great opportunity for family time. Try the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for more than a meal, it's a show by a talented and entertaining Teppanyaki chef who will cook and carve your meal on a Japanese Hibachi grill right before your eyes. His knife-wielding antics will "wow" you and the flavors will delight every palate. Another family option is the Cirque Dreams dinner show on Norwegian Epic and Cirque Dreams and Dinner Jungle Fantasy on Norwegian Breakaway.

After dinner there are child-appropriate stage shows, such as the amazing Blue Man Group on Norwegian Epic, Rock of Ages on Norwegian Breakaway or the Illusionarium on Norwegian Getaway, launching February 1st, 2014.

Sailing into port means another opportunity for shared family adventures, such as a snorkel adventure on a Caribbean or Hawai'i beach. There, among the coral, you will see live squid, sea turtles and angel and piper fish - all in their natural habitat. For a real treat there is whale watching, or swimming with the dolphins.

Best of all is Norwegian's newest ship, the brand new Norwegian Breakaway, which will sail a year-round schedule of seven-day cruises from New York City to Bermuda in the summer and seven-day cruises to the Bahamas and Florida in the winter beginning May 12th, 2013.

Norwegian Breakaway has five separate multi-story water slides. The Whip is two, side-by-side racing twister slides that deliver one unforgettable rush. Or, try the Free Fall - one of two drop-slides that plunges you feet first into fun. It's the fastest water slide at sea! Kids will love the water gadgets like slides, splashers and soakers. There is also the largest ropes course at sea, a bungee trampoline, nine-hole miniature golf, and a wicked spider web climbing cage.

Private Time for the Parents

Beyond the supervised activities; Norwegian also offers very late night supervision for your kids aged 3 to 12 for a small fee. The "Late Night Fun Zone" starts when the regular kids' activities end at 10:30 p.m. Late Night Fun stays open until 1:30 a.m. giving you plenty of time for anything you please, well into the wee hours.

There are similar programs while the ship is in port called "Port Play" if you and your spouse want quiet time on shore. Even better, there is no extra charge for this in-port service.
