Sabrett Hot Dogs on Norwegian Breakaway

The authentic taste of New York on Breakaway

"New York's finest" doesn't only mean the NYPD. Not, at least, for foodies. We think New York and hot dogs rather simultaneously, particularly Sabrett. As a native New Yorker, I grew up seeing the iconic carts (and smelling the aromas) on nearly every street corner. My mother would always say don't eat off the carts, but eat I did - actually, devour is the appropriate verb. Now Norwegian Breakaway, which will call the Big Apple its year-round homeport when it debuts in May 2013, announced it will provide complimentary Sabrett hot dogs to guests.

Located on the Waterfront, pool deck and forward deck, three Sabrett hot dog carts will sport the brand's yellow-and-blue umbrellas and offer the same all-beef frankfurters that New Yorkers adore. For those who never tasted a Sabrett, get ready for a treat. These dogs are particularly known for the noticeable snap of their natural casing.

Carts will feature Sabrett's own condiments, such as mustard, sauerkraut, relish and onions in a tomato sauce. Ordering a frank "all the way" means include every topping (the server will not think you are being forward).

"Sabrett is a New York institution, offering our famous all-beef frankfurters to New Yorkers for half a century," says Mark Rosen, vice-president of Sabrett. "We're so excited to offer our hot dogs onboard Norwegian Breakaway and look forward to welcoming New York's ship to the Sabrett family."

A hotdog without beer is like peanut butter without jelly, so Norwegian Breakaway will feature Brooklyn Brewery's Brooklyn Lager beer in Uptown Bar & Grill. (Brooklyn, by the way, has become the center for artisan food and beverages in New York.) Lager beer in the "Vienna" style, it sports an amber-gold color and firm malt center supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by "dry-hopping," the centuries-old practice of steeping beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation.

I'm wondering if you can sneak in the hotdog to Uptown Bar & Grill, or if you can take-away the beer or order it on the Waterfront.

This ship is shaping up to be an interesting vessel. The 4,000-passenger cruise ship will begin summer seven-day sails from Manhattan to the Bahamas, Florida and the Southern Caribbean.

Norwegian is throwing a lot of darts on its board in hopes of a bulls-eye. Breakaway has a new design to enhance guests' connection with the ocean. (Of course, you could just sail a 400-passenger ship without the bells-and-whistles and achieve the same goal.) Still, the attributes sound impressive: three Broadway shows onboard including five-time Tony-nominated "Rock of Ages, the terrific comedy troupe The Second City and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian will debut Ocean Blue, his first restaurant at-sea, among many.

The top decks of the ship will feature the first Aqua Pak at sea, with five full-size water slides, including twin free-fall slides (that sounds scary). A three-story sports complex will include the largest ropes course at-sea.
