I don't believe I have ever seen summer cruise prices like the ones I am seeing this year, especially for the premium cruise lines of Celebrity and Holland America. "Premium cruise lines," are a step above the mainstream cruise lines by offering more personalized service and more crewmembers per passenger. But right now these cruise lines are selling at mainstream prices with astoundingly affordable cruises in Europe especially, but also in Alaska - the two traditional summer destinations.
I just received a brand new price update from Celebrity and I was astounded to see Alaska cruises for as little as $599 per person - such as the June 15 cruise from Vancouver to Seward on Celebrity Millennium. That price is for an inside cabin, where most of the best discounts are to be found, but at that price who would complain? Oceanview staterooms, which are fine for the cooler Alaska climate, are just $679 per person. Verandas are $1349 on that sailing.
True last-minute discounts are an even better bargain; just $499 per person on the June 8th sailing from Seward to Vancouver also on Millennium, or $599 for inside or ocean view staterooms on the June 22 sailing.
Celebrity: All One Price Med Cruises
The Mediterranean is also very much "on sail" this year. We are seeing incredible bargains on the beautiful and newer Solstice-class ships; Celebrity Equinox and Silhouette. On many of these cruises the price is the same whether you book an inside, oceanview or verandah stateroom. The truth is these ships have a so many balcony cabins so there is no need to discount the lesser categories, but that fact has also made those abundant veranda staterooms is very affordable right now.
The 10-night Eastern Med cruise on Celebrity Equinox has the same price for inside, ocean view and veranda staterooms; $1099 per person for the July 13 sailing from Rome to Sicily, Athens, Ephesus, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos and Naples and returns to Rome. That ship alternates with a different Med sailing; 11 days from Rome to Santorini, Istanbul, Ephesus, Athens, Mykonos and Naples. The price for that July 23rd cruise is $1149 for inside, oceanview or verandah staterooms. Concierge class is just $1399.
The July 17th Eastern Med and Greek Isles 13-day cruise on Celebrity Silhouette is just $1299 per person, also for inside, oceanview or veranda staterooms. This cruise starts in Rome and visits Naples, Malta, Athens, Santorini, Ephesus, Rhodes, Mykonos, Crete, Sicily and ends in Venice. Even the Concierge class and AquaSpa cabins are bargains; $1599 and $1999 respectively. What incredible deals for these opulent, state-of-the-art vessels; Celebrity Silhouette and Equinox.
Holland America European Savings
At the same time, the equally premium Holland America has European cruises at prices that will knock your socks off. The 10-day Roman Empire cruise, sailing June 27 on the Noordam, starts at just $599 per person (inside), $699 (oceanview) and $999 for verandah staterooms. You start in Rome and visit Dubrovnik, Corfu, Katakolon (Greece), Santorini, Ephesus, Athens and Sicily. Not only that, but if you book two adults in a stateroom you can take your two kids in the same room at no additional cost (they sleep in a sofa bed or pull-downs).
The 12-day Mediterranean Tapestry cruise starts at $699 per person - and that is just $67 per day for a European cruise - incredible! Ocean views are $799 and verandahs are $1299. But you can add third and fourth persons to your staterooms for just $499 apiece. This cruise sails from Barcelona to Livorno, Rome, Naples, Sicily, Nafplion and Katakolon (Greece), Corfu, Dubrovnik and ends with an overnight in Venice.
Just for the record - Mediterranean cruises have been selling at a discount for a few years now, mainly due to reported political strife in Athens. For an update on why that is not a worry from a CruiseMates reporter who just returned from the scene read Janice Wald Henderson's trip report. Cruising to Athens - Scary or Sane?
Baltic Cruise Discounts!
Now here is something very unusual - while Med cruises have been on sale for a few years, the same cannot be said of northern Europe - until this year; Holland America is offering "Gems of the Baltic" on the beautiful new Eurodam with interior staterooms at $899, oceanview at $899 and verandah cabins for just $1099. This is an incredible bargain - these Baltic cruises have sold for closer to $3000 per person in the past.
This cruise starts in Copenhagen and visits Estonia, St. Petersburg (Russia) overnight, Helsinki (Finland), Stockholm, Warnemunde (the port city to see Berlin, Germany), Kiel and returns to Copenhagen. Even better, the cruise has air credits of $500 per passenger.
In fact, Holland America is offering air credits on almost all of its European cruises this year - and the airfare is one of the primary reasons why people are not choosing to cruise in Europe this year. Problem solved.
