The 130,000 ton ship begins sailing from the Big Easy on April 14, 2014

When Carnival Dream begins sailing out of  New Orleans on Monday, April 14, it will become the largest cruise ship to sail from that port. The port has invested $2.3m in upgrades to its Erato Street Cruise Terminal to accommodate a ship as large as the 130,000 - tons.

New Orleans has been a popular port city for Carnival for many years, with various ships departing from there. Currently the Carnival Imagination also sails from the city, but Carnival Dream will replace the newly revised Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny) which will relocate to Port Canaveral, essentially trading places with Carnival Dream.

Carnival Dream was the first of the “Dream-class” of Carnival Ship, the largest family of ships ever built by the cruise line. She was launched in 2008 and is 128,250-tons, carries 3652 passengers and 1369 crewmembers. Although she is one of the newer carnival ships, however, she is not fully fitted with the “FunShip 2.0” amenities that her newer sister ships: Magic and Breeze.

Carnival Dream replaces Carnival Sunshine, which is redeploying to Port Canaveral, and bolsters Carnival Cruise Lines' year-round program of two vessels that are expected to carry a total of 400,000 passengers annually, more than any other New Orleans operator.

The ship is scheduled to depart on its inaugural six-day cruise from New Orleans at approximately 4 p.m. Monday. Here is the schedule of cruises she will be offering from New Orleans.
