The Sapphire Princess is now up to date with the newer Princess ships such as Emerald and Ruby

The new "Piazza" atrium on Sapphire Princess

The ship is one of the largest ships remaining on the West Coast, mostly based in Los Angeles and sailing on unusual itineraries to Mexico, Hawaii, California Wine Country and Alaska. The new onboard amenities include a brand new Piazza Atrium, with the same International Café and Vines wine bar as well as the new Alfredo's Pizzeria.

The top pool deck now has a large movie screen for Movies Under the Stars and the adults-only area known as The Sanctuary has been added to the stern.

This now brings Sapphire Princess into the same league as the Princess ships sailing out of Florida and in Europe - it also has all of the hallmark Princess features such as the Culinary Center, the Sterling Steakhouse and Sabatini's Italian Restaurant, Skywalker's nightclub, the Patisserie and Sundaes Ice Cream bar. Here are the details on the new Sapphire amenities:

The Piazza Atrium - the bottom floor of the multi-level atrium is the social hub on the newer Princess ships, with a gelateria and a wine bar. Now Princess has added Alfredo's Pizzeria to the area making it a fun gathering place night and day.

The European influence is unmistakable; like sitting in a sidewalk café and enjoying people watching. There are spontaneous performances by all kinds of artists from vocalists to musical instrument virtuosos and even tumbling and gymnastic skills.

The International Café offers "quick bites" of pastries, fresh baked cookies or Panini sandwiches, as well as espresso, cappuccino and gelato. The Vines wine bar features hundreds of varieties available by the glass, with an experienced sommelier available to help you select a bottle to enjoy with your dinner.

Alfredo's Pizzeria was first introduced last year aboard Grand Princess, and now has its second location on Sapphire Princess. The casual restaurant serves up an enticing menu of freshly prepared, hand-stretched, individual-size pizzas. The name comes from the master executive chef of Princess Cruise Line, Alfredo Marzi. There is an open kitchen where passengers can watch chefs prepare the made to order individual pizzas.

Movies Under the Stars - with the addition of the grand movie screen on the upper pool deck to Sapphire Princess the cruise line now has Movies Under the Stars on every single one of its ships. The giant screen will offer feature films, concerts, awards shows and sports events. Passengers can relax in padded loungers under warm, fleece blankets, with complimentary popcorn and other treats, of course.

The Sanctuary - Sapphire Princess was also the final ship in the Princess fleet to receive The Sanctuary, the exclusive "adults only" tranquility retreat. Serenity Stewards attend to passenger's every need, offering beverages and light snacks, MP3 players pre-loaded with vast song selections, and the occasional sprit of the cooling mist of an atomizer filled with Evian water.

Several venues were renovated and relocated, including the Art Gallery, Internet Café and Library. New carpet, upholstery and tile work was added throughout the ship, and staterooms now feature new flat-screen televisions.

Sapphire Princess set sail on February 4 on a 14-day Hawaiian Islands cruise roundtrip from Los Angeles.
