I think you can argue anything with Carnival and often win, if you work at it and wear them down.

One cruise I booked ES then ended up paying the $50pp to switch to a different ship. Even though ES rates weren't available for the new sailing, my booking stayed ES. Would seem to be a potential way to exploit the system.
