Default No free checked luggage on AA

Just heard today that American Airlines in now charging $15 for your FIRST piece of checked baggage! I can see the overheads filling up rather quickly now. What a way to run an airline. Wonder who will follow their lead.

Haven't heard this one yet, hope its wrong...They have to expect passengers to have luggage. I can understand the charge for a 2nd bag, but not for just one??

Afraid it is true. Here's from AA's website (copy & pasted directly): And note, both the $15 for the first bag and the $25 for the second bag is EACH WAY. Take two bags now, like the old days and you just added $80 to your ticket. Hmmm....same outfit for both formal nights!

Direct from American Airlines Site:

"Know before you go!

Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after May 12, 2008 but before June 15, 2008 may check one bag for free and check a second bag for $25 each way. Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after June 15, 2008 will be charged $15 each way for the first checked bag and $25 each way for the second checked bag. Our carry-on policy of one personal item (such as a purse or laptop bag) plus one bag remains in place."

I find that highway robbery to charge anywhere from $30-$80 for LUGGAGE!!!! (do they expect you to buy everything you need sat your destination and then abandon what you bought before you go home). I have two wonder how they are justifying both an additional fuel tax and N NOW a charge for luggage. I have to feel for those that are going on an extended vacation for say 4-6 weeks or longer?....

I sure hope Air Canada and other airlines don't do this.....Aviation fuel may be expensive, but don't try to empty our bank acocunts because we have no other convenient way to get to where we are going. Hell, if I wanted to get to Miami on the train or on the bus I'd have to leave a week before the cruise and then spend a week coming back home!!!!!!

Recently there were posts on the cost/viability of shipping luggage to your destination ahead of time.

With this news on additional $ for baggage we are going to make some serious inquiries of shipping services for our Alaska cruise and our Blogger cruise. We could even drive to NOLA tho gas prices may negate the savings there.

Default Shipping luggage ahead

I see in the Princess cruise brochure, that you can ship your luggage directly to the cruise port so many days prior to your departure...so you don't have to drag bags around at the airports. Thought this sounded like an expensive convenience at the time....but now, may prove to be cheaper than loading on the plane (both way charges) as well as more convenient!

If I read the article right - overseas travel is exempt from the extra charges. Hope this is true - and if AA thinks they are going to make more
$$$ - they have another thing coming - hopefully, they will lose business
and rethink this policy. I think everyone should be allowed the first bag
included (notice I did not say FREE ) as the airfares are NO bargain anyway.

You should have checked bags for free from what I've read.

Do you think the airlines are not getting clobbered with higher fuel prices?

Should they just lose money so we can get to where we want to go?

Paying for services, like luggage, is an alternative to just jacking up the fare. If you don't use the service you don't pay extra...if you use the service a lot more than the next guy (a lot of bags) then you pay more than the next guy.

Sounds to me like a fair solution to a real problem

There are times that I fly to SF round trip in one day with no luggage and therefore no additional weight to lift.
Should I pay the same as a vacationing couple with 2 bags apiece?

And I suppose you are in favor of the airlines charging passengers by the
"pound" as well ??? (See another thread). First the airlines say we have
to pack anything over 3 oz. in our checked luggage and now they are
charging us when we follow THEIR rules. My personal gripe is with all
the "carry-ons" that others try to cram into the overheards. There should
better control over the sizes of bags you can carry on. These passengers
are getting away from paying the checked bag fee not to mention the
additional inconvenience to other passengers while they find a place to
stow their "stuff". We saw a family of 8 travel with nothing but carry-
on luggage and they proceeded to totally fill up 33 % of that plane's
overhead space. NOT RIGHT.

You're right. My mistake.

The airlines should never raise their fares or try to recoup the higher costs that they incur.
After all, they are fabulously wealthy with an unlimited supply of capital.

It's a good thing that they don't have to pay the amount we do for fuel.

Sure - why not !!!! I am fully aware of the rising prices of EVERYTHING we use in this day and age. Just expressing my opinion - and with all
your traveling - I suppose you have never observed my previous statement??? Oh, I forgot - you must be one of the "overhead bin"
occupants.

You make an incorrect assumption.
Yes, I carry my laptop...and only my laptop on board.
I always check any luggage regardless of size because I don't want the hassle and I leave plenty of time to pick it up.

I have actually had an attendant suggest I have my computer checked because there wasn't enough room in the bins due to the very, very many pieces of oversized luggage stuffed up there. I made it very clear that one of those foot lockers will get checked before my computer gets tossed on the conveyor belt. That may be uppity, but so be it.

And because I travel so much I frequently find myself in first class. As you are aware, 1st class gets seated first so I get to "people watch" as people board. More than once I have observed someone put their luggage in a bin over my head and continue onto coach. Guess what? I grab their bag and return it to them in their seat!

And before you completely label me....I'm one of those guys who gives up my 1st class seat to a man/woman in uniform, although I will admit only for flights of three hours or less.

AAAAAND if they charged me for my weight....I'd have to take the bus.

I agree with Sherrie, first they tell us that we have to check in certain things and then they say that we must pay extra to check in things! That make no sence for me.

I know that many things have to be checked in for security reasons but as long as we are forced to check in a bag (at least if we use shampoo, shaving foam, sun lotion etc.) I don´t think that it´s okey to make us pay for it.

Of course the airlines must make enough money but I think that forcing the passengers to pay for the first checked in bag is to go to far. Where shall the line be? I think that it´s okey to pay extra for food but not to use the toilet! If they make us pay for our luggage, why not let us pay a dollar to use the toilet? Why shall I have to pay for the toilet on the plane if I don´t use it? If I use the stairs in the airport, why shouldn´t those who use the elevator pay extra?

The bottom line is they must increase their revenue to survive and that is nothing but fact.
I think applying user fees is fair.
If they do not do it this way then everybody's fare will increase...without a doubt.
Would you rather that your fare just be upped 40.00 each way?
If so, then all of our points are moot.

Hi Erik - GEE!!!!! we actually agree on something !! HeHe! Maybe we will
have to pay extra to carry our passports, too. (inside joke for Erik). I am
just a middle-class working wife and mother who - along with everyone
else except the very rich and the very poor - is supporting this great
country of ours not to mentiOn all the aid we Send to foreign countries.
My DH is self-employed and as such - can't reap the benefits of paid vacations, sick days, health insurance, 401 K,stock options, etc. The slow economy, a war I am totally sick of and
the state of taxation is forcing out middle class America - I DO NOT have a problem with any person, company or corporation making a profit.
BUT I AM SICK AND TIRED OF PAYING THROUGH THE NOSE AND
GETTING NOTHING FOR MY HARD-EARNED EFFORTS AND MONEY.but excuses and higher taxes. Unfortunately, the candidates for our highest office leave
ALOT to be desired. God only knows what next year will bring!!!

I´m not sure how it is in the US but as I see it, in Europe we have three different types of airlines.

1. Low cost no service airlines. For example Ryanair and Easyjet (Southwest in the US?). If you fly with them you pay extra for everything. For example you pay to check in bags, water, to board among the first (even if you travel with children) etc. The tickets are sometimes free so we are then talking LOW cost but the tickets can also cost much and you still have to pay to get some water on the plane.

2. Normal cost almost no service airlines. For example SAS and KLM. Most of those airlines are airlines that have existed for a long time but now they have problems and try to be more like the low cost airlines to earn money. SAS don´t offer food or drinks (unless you pay for it of course) on European flights anymore and the overall service has gone down but so has the prices too. (I guess that both AA and United are in this category if we look at the US)

3. Airlines which still offer the service they used to offer. British Airways is the only airlines I know in this category. They still serve food (on short flights, for example London-Stockholm, it´s sandwiches so it´s not much but at least it´s something to eat) and drinks and the overall service is still good.

The prices on SAS and BA are often almost the same so SAS should earn more money but they don´t! SAS loose a lots of money and BA earns a lots of money so extra charges can´t be the solution!!!!

The real low cost airlines earn money and the traditional airlines earn money so the problem is the airlines that try to be like low cost airlines, for example AA!

Charge extra for everything and you loose your customers!!! I will never fly with SAS as long as British Airways still keep their service!
