Snorkeling in St. Thomas/Maarten

Sailing on Dream Dec. 15. Stopping at Thomas & Maarten. Looking to snorkel at one or both without taking excursions. Have a few questions. 1. What is the best location to snorkel at both. 2. How far from the beach do you have to swim to reach any reef for snorkeling? 3. We have our on eq. except for bcd's (floating device). Do they offer these for rent at the beach? 4. What is the water depth at the snorkeling locations?

Thanks for your help.
God Bless.

When you are in St. Thomas, I would suggest going over to St. Johns and do some snorkeling. There are quite a few beaches there that are good, I truly loved Trunk Bay, they have a snorkeling trail underwater that is impressive, plus you can snorkel around a small island. This does require some travel time, you need to take a cab to Red Hook ferry, then after the ferry ride, another cab to a beach. So, if you have the time, it is a well worth trip.
