Default Dunn's River Falls

Can you do the falls trip and not climb the falls (afraid of heights)? Can you play in the water? What else is there to see there?

Default Falls

It's been a few years since I've been there but you don't have to climb the falls. There are stairs along side and places to sit. At the end of the falls there are shops.:-D

Yep, we haven't been for a few years but that is how I recall it, you WILL get hassled by people selling stuff, Jamaicans can be a bit "forward"

We, too, have not been to Dunns Falls in many years but our experience was OK. I would, however, wear my old shorts or bathing suit, since the rocks are not smooth and damage your clothing if you opt to climb up and down the Falls. Wear sturdy shoes also. When we went, we had to engage a "guide" for a fee to escort us. Don't know if that's changed. And, yes, you will be accosted at all stops to purchase numerous items, not all legal.

Buy beach shoes at home, to use at Dunns River...the pebbly bottoms on them, will give you better traction on the rocks..

You can go up or down the stairs next to the falls. At the bottom (or on the way up) you can "play in the water". There are several ways to move from the falls to the stairs.

If I remember correctly, up until the last segment of the falls there's really not a height problem. You can get out and go on the stairs before then if you want.

There is an area at the top where Jamaican's sell stuff, but if you're not interested just say "no thanks". It doesn't bother me and I found one of my favorite owls (yes, I collect them) at a stall above DRF's.

If you're going to climb, I agree with Trip-buy water shoes at home (Wal-Mart has them).

Catty, the " Falls " at Dunn's river is not a waterfall in the true sense but more like a steep rapids that cascades down in steps to the ocean. There's a wide, easily traveled trail alongside the river and falls that you can follow to the bottom. It has benches to sit and rest, as the climb back up is a little steep in places. There's a small beach area where the river empties into the ocean.
At the top coming back up is where you have to pass through an area of shops where the vendors can be a little pushy --if you're not interested in anything, just say no thanks, smile and keep walking. If you stop, they'll be on you. If you want to shop, you'll have ample opportunity to do so but as I said they can be persistent.Dunn's River is not what we would call a river here in Ky--more of a creek but it is pretty and a lot of fun. If you do decide to climb up the Falls through the water, take the others advice and take you a pair of water shoes and be careful--you can easily fall and possibly hurt yourself, as the rocks can be slick. Be careful of carrying a camera if you do take to the water as you stand a good chance of ruining it.
Back next to the pier is a shopping complex, beach, Jimmy Buffets, etc. so there's quite a lot to do right at the dock if you're into that .

Yes you don't have to go into the water. The last time that we're there was in December 2005. Back then we didn't want to go in the water. If you did decide to go in the water, you must rent a pair of shoes, (they looked just like "crocks"), before they would let you in the water. As I recall the rental fee was $10.00. We walked along the stairs that followed the river. I was able to take a lot of good photos there. We did see several people slip & fall into the river, because the river runs very fast. After we took all the photos that we wanted, we noticed that there were a few places to eat. I had the very best "Jerk Chicken" that i've ever had and to top it off with a "Red Stripe Beer". Also we were never hassled by anyone trying to sell us items. I did purchase some "Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee". It's the best coffee in the world.

I agree with Trip, we took our own beach shoes and we still have them, they come in handy anytime you do anything in the water, even canoeing. And they last forever. They did require you to either have your own beach shoes or rent there's. And I think everyone we came into contact with in Jamaica was pushy. I think that is just there way. We were there for a week on vacation.
