Default Early Saver Rocks

I booked next weeks Triumph cruise a long time ago, just about the time
Carnival started offering the Early Saver Promo. I was really happy with
the price I got since it went up and up from there... Until last night that is...
then the price dropped almost $600. I got in touch with my TA who filled
out a price protection form, and next Saturday when I board I should have
almost $600 in onboard credit waiting for me yay!;-)

So you can get a price adjustment when you use Early Saver, huh? For some reason, I thought if you used Early Saver, you forfeited this. I booked the Miracle and ended up getting about a $500 adjustment. It's great!

Way to go BW !! Gotta keep an eye on those prices.

Wonder if the oil thing had anything to do with the price drops?

Btw, whose going to pick up all the mouses your cat catches while you are gone next week?!

The thing to remember with the Early Saver is that your deposit is non-refundable... you can however transfer it to a different cruise if you need to cancel (I think there is a $50 charge associated with this) but for us it is great because we almost always have a cruise booked so if we needed to cancel we'd just transfer the deposit to another booking, no biggie.

I booked this cruise a long time ago when the prices we very low, so I really didn't expect it to go below what I paid for it, since it was usually $500-$1000 higher. It was a good deal for us, so if you can plan at least 3 mos. ahead, and cruise enough that you can transfer the deposit should you need to change plans, it's a great deal.

It may be the oil causing the price drop(if I had known the oil spill was going to be like this I might have booked something else). I will be watching the price until Thursday, if it drops any further I will file another claim for sure.

As for the mice, we decided to move all the cat stuff (litter boxes) into the house while we're gone and block their cat door into the garage (where they find the mice) and we have a designated cat sitter coming in until the 9th, then a neighbor will take over from there until we return.

I also intend to cover the furniture with tarps and comforters, since I don't know how the new guy will react to our absence... I don't want any unpleasant surprises when we return .

I'll be sailing Saturday (the only 7 day cruise on the Triumph in June), the first and second pass rate had gotten into the $800 range for a while, then the past few days plummeted to $479. I just looked and it is no longer showing on Carnival's website, so perhaps it is now sold out. The 3rd and 4th pass. rate is now less than half what I payed originally.

It would be great if you were able to join us, maybe something will open up.

I've been watching prices like a hawk lately. During the three-day sale last month our rate dropped about $40/person, but I flat out forgot to file a claim.

It dropped a little bit a couple of weeks ago so I filed a claim and got a small discount, maybe there will be more between now and September.

Is there typically a timeframe in which Carnival is likely to make price adjustments downward on a cruise (e.g. 3 months, 2 months, etc. prior to departure)? Or, is the price change something you all look for every day, once a week, etc? I ask as I just booked my first Early Saver and would like to know the best way to monitor for price decreases, which I would definitely love to happen.

There is no rhyme or reason for price drops, basically its the supply and demand, so just keep checking. It all depends on how well the ship is selling for your sailing.

Hi, After reading this thread I have called the agent that booked my Liberty cruise. my price too has dropped. I have not recieved the amount yet from Carnival but will be getting obc for the difference. I am very happy about that.

Talking

I had already checked this morning, and checked again this afternoon out of boredom and i was able to find our rate $50pp lower and sent the request in, looks like another $100 coming my way!!

FYI, they are running some "cash back" specials on Galveston cruises right now.

Default Agreed!

Agreed with the Early Saver being a great incentive and tool for advertising. Our last cruise (so long ago) on the Holiday nettted us a great OBC, of course the wife drank that in day almost.
We wanted to cruise this year, but were unable to with health concerns of an in'law. However, we are looking to cruise June2011 and I'm sure to click the early saver. Hopefuly we'll get luck again too this time as well.

This is why we ran the stories about the change in Best Price Guarantees.

When Royal Caribbean changed their policy last month we predicted prices would be falling, and they are. Kudos to Carnival for sticking WITH their Early Savers programs.

Yes - the price of oil has dropped dramatically - down to $70/barrel when it was as high as $85 just aboutr 6 weeks ago. That gives them a lot of wiggle room on pricing.

It is the economy - it has nothing to do with the Oil Spill. The spill normally would have driven prices higher, but the new weakness in Europe has consumers not spending over there, and they pay a LOT for gas.

By the way - in case you are not watching - our economy is really tanking again and this time it could take a long time to pull out again.

Thumbs up I like this a lot!

I'm loving this, I got a $50pp adjustment earlier this week for our September cruise on the Conquest and checked this morning and the rate had dropped another $30pp so I sent my third request in. Assuming this is approved, this means the rate had dropped $100pp since I booked early saver back in March.

The final balance is due on this on June 29, but my balance keeps dropping due to these rate reductions, if this keeps up I won't have to pay much more at all.

It is a good deal and I have been telling a lot of readers about it. I hope they keep it up unlike Royal caribbean which cancelled their program after years.

I really like the program too. Have received two price reductions and an up-deck so far. After final payment date and payment if the rate goes down further is when the OBC's will kick in.

I guess I should post a follow up to this... after we file the price protection form...two days later Carnival responded and said they denied my claim. Luckily, my wonderful TA refiled the claim and included the faxed copy of the pricing I printed out at the time of the price drop. Carnival did not respond within 2 business days as they claim they will on their website.

When Mert went and looked at the booking all they credited was $2 and change for a drop in taxes and not the $670 they actually should have credited. Well it was Thursday and we sailed on Saturday... Mert kept working on it even after we sailed. Finally on day #4 of our cruise the credit was finally applied. Mert emailed me to let me know and it finally showed up on our onboard account.

I learned a lot... #1 if you see a lower price, print it out or do a screen shot and be able to prove it, since Carnival isn't going to honor the price drop without documentation, even if the rate was lower. #2 Book through a great TA so you have an objective 3rd party to fight for you. #3 Don't expect Carnival to reply in a timely manner and be prepared to follow up if they don't.

Thank you BW for that important update.

And I am really glad you got that credit - I am sure your status as a regular poster on CruiseMates had a LOT to do with it!

Anyway - this is really worth an article unto itself.

Of course I would expect Carnival to deny a claim unless you had proof. I also like what you had to say about a GREAT travel agent.

Did you know that can affect the commission your travel ahent will earn on that cruise?

That's right.

Paul,
I am interested to find out how that affects my TA's commission on the Early Saver Rate? I don't doubt what you say is true, but I would appreciate more info to that affect.

Since Carnival is not refunding the difference in fare, but actually offering OBC for the difference, they still penalize the TA? That stinks! I guess if I were a TA, then I would have a major problem with that, especially since the TA has the added burden of chasing Carnival for the credit they owe their client. If I were the TA I might have to re-think offering discounted pricing on Early Saver Bookings if it were unprofitable.

Any TA's care to chime in on this?

What Paul says is true. The TA's commission will be based on the lower fare. You know you have a great TA when they work so hard to help you get the reduced rate knowing their commission will also be reduced. Send her a TY card bennie. Hang on to her. Glad I have a good one too.

They always does a great job and I always thank them for all their hard work. I think this time though... they most definitely deserve something extra... for going above and beyond the call of duty.

I have sent them chocolate in the past and I know they enjoyed that... Something along those lines is definitely in order!

They are terrific!

I have had no problems as of yet with the early saver.. I booked in Aug our cruise is in 24 days. What I did not take into considereation of age at the time of booking. I was 54, but when I turned 55 I called CCL and they gave me OBC. To add to it I just found out 2 weeks ago that they have a military discount, so I called and sent them the DD214 and we got upgraded one grade. I am still watching prices, but we got such a great deal the first time around I doubt it will go down any lower.
