Since we are new to cruising we plan on booking shore excursions through the ship (just to be safe etc) I've noticed that some shore excursions are scheduled 15 min after the ship is scheduled to dock. Will they hold the excursion until you get off the ship or whats the rule of thumb in these sittuations?
The ship has been in contact w/ the tour operator about the ships bookings, so they will be waiitng.
If the ship is late, then the tours are set back by that amount of time, so there's no concerns there.
Also with every line we have travelled on the Shore Excursions desk sent out tickets, which you hand in when you get on the coach/boat/bikes etc. So they know how many to expect & how many are missing.
Obviously they won't wait forever, but will wait a reasonable amount of time as controlled by the tour itinerary (or your fellow passengers patience).
Havea great time,
Alan

Ok guys booking through the ship and booking a private guides has its advantages and dis-advantages..
Firstly If you book through the ship it will be the same registered tour operators taking you and if you do arrive too late whether or not you book with them they will leave.
Booking through the ship you will be added to a group of 20 to 50 persons depending on the excursions but it will be cheaper. Many persons don't like too much crowd, to wait or to be hurried ti catch the bus. Big group excursions are limited to one or two excursions and private you get to do more. I have been a private operator for 9 years now and never had a problem.
All private pickups are recorded at each cruise terminal and this is one way that guest safety will be ensured. We have to send email samples to show that this persons was also booked with us tot he management of the pier. Safety is also in the registered operators hand whether private or none private once you left the dock. These are some important pointer that first time cruiser will not be aware of.

Hi there, I found your reply most interesting, and was left wondering if there is a global database of tour operators, accessible to the public, showing the operators registration, insurance provisions & liabilities, and codes of practice etc. which would help ensure that we pick a safe & trustworthy operator?
Many thanks, in advance,
Alan.
