In Cozumel, I saw a ship's crew member from the stage crew go through the security line and as she started to walk away the guard noticed a swiss army knife on her belt. She was detained. I was wondering if I had purchased a swiss army knife how would I get it through security either in Cozumel or even the USA and would there be a hassle since they might be a banned item. Does anyone know what the answer to this question is?
I doubt seriously, that you'd be allowed to board the ship with the knife. I used to work, as a contractor, aboard Carnival ships when they were in port, in Tampa, and had to bring tools aboard, on occasion. I ALWAYS had to be very careful about what I brought aboard, even as an employee of the line! I think if you found a knife, or most anything that could be considered a weapon, the best thing to do would be to ship, or mail it to your home address from the port where you bought it. I think it would probably save you a lot of grief, and probably you'd never be able to bring the item aboard, and would wind up losing it!
Good luck, and have a GREAT cruise.
I've carried a Leatherman multi-tool on just about every cruise I've been on. I pack it in my checked baggage when I fly but I always carry it in my backpack on shore. I have been asked about it a couple of times but I have always been allowed with it back on board.
The "strict" interpretation of policy will probably say you can't have it so it could be best to not have any sort of knife.
Take care,
Mike

A swiss army knife can be justified as long as you explain that you need the pointy bit to take stones out of your horses hooves.
Problen is getting a big enough cabin to keep the horse in
