Depending on your length of time in port, you may want to make certain you will get the full value of the visit to Universal given the time allowed when factoring in transportation time to and from the park. To rent a car although may be more cost effective if split with a group of 4 guests, you have to deal with pick up anjd drop off of the vehicle, refueling, etc....
Personally I think a trip to Orlando needs to be done as a land vacation to get a less stressful (time wise) experience of all that is available to do while there for a few days.

I never felt that trips like this should even be considered as a "shore excursion".... But just my honest opinion.

I would do it through the ship be because of the long drive to and from. You would have to be concerned about getting and dropping off the rental car, plus transportation to the rental place. And traffic around Orlando can be a nightmare. I would not be relaxed enough to enjoy it, due to worry about getting back to the ship on time. This is one where letting them take care of everything may well be worth the extra cost.

I definitely agree, if you cannot do this at some other date as a land vacation, then I would pay the extra just for the peace of mind. All the potential hassle of finding the car pick up point, making your own way, possibly having to queue where the ship may have secured priotity entry & so on, and that before you get there. The you will have to cut the day really short to return the car in time to get transferred back to the ship before it sails.

I hate paying over the odds, but sometimes it's the best/safest way.

Hi Box,
I would also suggest just booking through the cruiseline for this. There is some distance to travel and why take a chance of being late, getting lost, etc....Just take it easy and let them worry about getting you there and back to the ship.

I am normally a big advocate of private/do your own tours. However, for first timers in any situation where transportation and time are an issue, I would recommend a ship's excursion.
