I don't see anything impressive or innovative about her. They might be keeping some secrets but at the moment it looks like any other holland ship just bigger....which most holland guests don't like.

I really dislike the name. Is there any historical significance to it?

Holland America's new cruise ship, Koningsdam, will mark the first in its Pinnacle. As long-time fans of Holland America Line, we were curious to learn the latest details of the new Koningsdam cruise chip. Koningsdam will be Holland America's largest and most modern vessel to date. Luxurious new vessel Koningsdam will be largest in Holland America Line's impressive fleet. Holland America Line recently announced the name of its newest.

The first part of the name Koning(s) is the Dutch word for Kings. All last part of the HAL ships end with DAM. which means dyke and is an essential part of the protection of The Netherlands (without it, a substantial part of the country would under water, including the Schiphol Amsterdam Airport - 4,5 metres under sea-level).
The name is chosen to honour the inauguration of the current king.
So even ifvyou don't like the name, it has a (recent) background

The new Koningsdam has more cabins, more passengers, more bars, more restaurants, and more space than her sisters - but she will not have the additional crew needed to take care of all those extras.

Our one and only cruise on HAL was awful. I do realize that they could not be that bad and still be in business. For our Konsingdam booking, it's because of the itinerary and price. A friend did HAL to Alaska last year and really enjoyed it. I'd definitely look to HAL or Princess for Alaska.

We've got more nights on Holland than any other cruise line - not by choice, but we've just never done anything shorter than 10 nights on any of our Holland cruises. We've never had a bad cruise and it's one of our favorites. But then again, we're 66 and Holland caters more to an older crowd, which is what we like, while others don't.

As for Alaska, I like Holland better than others for several reasons; first, they've been cruising in Alaska longer than any other cruise line. They have more ships up there than anyone else. They own all of their lodges and hotels for those doing cruisetours. And they go to all of the ports.

Then again, if you're traveling with children, it's probably not one you want to consider. In that case, I would suggest looking at Princess.

Keep in mind that the itinerary in Alaska is important and may push you towards a particular cruise line. For example, RCCL and Celebrity don't go to Glacier Bay. So, if that's someplace you definitely want to see, then those two lines are now out of consideration.

Thanks Pete, we booked Princess for several reasons.
1. We are taking our two grandkids
2. Princess has a two bedroom family suite and Holland does not
3. We do not have time to do land portion; so we are doing inside passage on Emerald Princess next year

Koningsdam is the biggest ship in the fleet:

With the poorest crew to passenger ratio in the fleet
With the smallest cabins in the fleet
With the smallest space per passenger ratio in the fleet
With the smallest promenade spaces in the fleet
With the (generally) highest fares in the fleet

Sounds like a winner...............

I'm booked on the Dec.4 2016 sailing. The new ship, itinerary and price hooked me. I booked a single ocean view cabin and wasn't charged double of the single.
I've been with HA once and thought the line was very good.

Sorry for not responding to your post earlier, I didn't see it. But I'm surprised no one has answered you, yet.

From what I've seen from pictures, the accessible cabins have a small table and a small desk, but no sofa. Reason being is they like to insure as much maneuvering room as possible, since many people booking those cabins are using a wheelchair or mobility scooter. A large coffee table and/or sofa would take up a great deal of space and would not make it as accessible.

As for the verandah, there are two chairs and a small table. Again, nothing too large, so as to give room for wheelchairs.

Hope this helps.

Pete
