Are you perhaps thinking of MV. In a ships name, MV means motor vessel(likewise SV means sailing vessel) I could be wrong, and often am,but I do not believe I have ever seen the term DV before the name of a ship.
Bill is exactly right. Depending on the tradition of the line and Country of registry, a ship may be designate as "m/v", Motor Vessel or "m/s", Motor Ship. Then the are still ships which are designated as "SS"... Steam Ship... for obvious reasons. Also now the Millennium class vessels are categorized as "GTS", Gas Turbine Ship, again for obvious reasons.
