Default Additional Tipping waiter and room steward

Been on several Princess cruises and I always give my room steward and dining room waiter an additional tip at the end of the cruise. I was just told all employees who receive an additional tip are required to turn it in and it is then divided among the others. Does anyone know if this is true?

No it is not true. Any tips the staff get in cash they can keep. But why even make it public? If you want to tip in cash give to the person in a quite way. If I hand a waiter folded money or give the cabin steward money while inside the cabin no one knows what has been done.

Because it is so unclear what happens with these auto daily fees I always remove them and tip in cash to the people I want tipped.

On Princess, that most certainly is true, because their rules changed several years ago. If you give a cash tip to a staff member, they are required by Princess rules to turn that in to be shared by everyone. If they get caught, they can be suspended or terminated.

If you have a staff member that you feel went above and beyond, you can go to the Customer Service desk to provide them a gratuity. However, personally I would suggest you give them a gift, which they do not have to turn in and provides a more personal touch than cash. For example, I have one client who takes pre-paid telephone cards and credit cards to provide as gifts.

I have heard that cash tips are pooled but have also been told when I directly ask officers that they are not. It is just another example of how dishonest the cruise lines are and how you can never get the truth.

But since no one knows how much I tip or if I even tip how wood the ship know what was going on? I tip a member of the wait staff $101 dollars, yes $101, in case it is seen, he she only needs to turn in $1 if asked.

Since many of the crew members my wife and I interact with are from the Philippines I have more options than most guest. I have in the past on a longer cruise done a transfer directly to the crew members family here in the Philippines.

What people need to understand is the cruise lines use agents to hire crew. These local agents take the first months base pay from the crew member as a fee. It costs the cruise line nothing to use agencies. They tell the crew member that taking a very low base pay is better because your fee is lower. Cruise lines overall are trying to get very single extra dollar they can both from guest and crew.

As long as you did not remove(or reduce) the daily gratuity they get to keep what you give them. There is talk, that it still has to go into the pool & as long as the daily gratuity was not changed, the additional tip you give is returned. Personally I've asked staff & they tell me they get to keep any tips over & above the standard daily gratuity.

Wink Princess tipping policy

Please do NOT remove the daily gratuity! It shortchanges those staff you do not see. If you wish to give extra to your waiter/room attendant, please feel free, but do not remove the daily tip & just give it to them. They would now have to put it in the pool. As long as you leave on the daily tip, any extra they do get to keep. To those who pocket the tip(you KNOW who you are!)I suggest you look up the word KARMA!
