Default Explorer of the Seas - Lessons Learned

We just returned from a GREAT cruise on the Explorer of the Seas (November 19 – 28, 2010) and I wanted to share some things we learned.

Lessons Learned

1. Big ships (over 1,000 feet) still rock and roll. Stabilizers help a lot, but you will still feel the motion of the ocean. We had very calm seas and still some people got sick.
2. No need to bring shampoo. The ship has shampoo dispensers in all the showers.
3. Don’t book a cruise over the holidays, unless you like lots of kids. There were over 800 kids onboard this Thanksgiving cruise.
4. Pack fewer clothes than you think. We never wore everything we packed.
5. The only clock in your cabin is on the telephone and is very small and does not light up. So consider bringing an alarm clock.
6. Bringing a small night-light was a nice addition.
7. They will charge you $20 for towels not returned. We brought our own.
8. Have a few glasses of wine or beer before you go to the loading area for the tender boats at Samana. Loading the boats was totally disorganized and chaotic. It was like this was the first time the cruise line had to load boats. They almost put us on the wrong boat.
9. Do not flush the toilet while still sitting down.
10. Promenade cabins are very nice. It was a good choice. Bed/bedding was extremely comfortable.
11. The ship used 6,200 pounds of turkey and only had one and a half pounds left over. No left over turkey sandwiches.

Good advices!

Agree about no. 4, I always pack too much, but I will never pack towels (no. 7) as I always have to fly to my cruises.
About no. 5; if you are from Europe and bring an alarm clock that is connected to the power outlet (230 V) you have to consider that the frequencey is 60Hz onboard, not 50Hz as we are used to in Europe. This means that the clock will go 20% faster than it should (I've tried that on Voyager OTS and was very confused at first... ).

Just before the cruise, we bought a battery operated alarm clock. So we did not have to worry about the power requirements. But you brought up a good point.

Took me three cruises to "EXPLORE" everything on that ship. All while sailing to Bermuda.

Our first cruise on her, we were too far fore for comfort when booking, but found the ship handled pretty well, and found regardless of the location, it was a smooth ride, unless the sea was hitting at an awkward angle.

Our first and third cruis, the food was OK. Our second, the food was AWFUL.

Our last cruise on her, the Windjammer had basically the same crap EVERY DAY.

We found all the extra amenities on this ship actually deflected the crowd, so we were basically happy wherever we were.

And, although I liked the ship, it's time to bring a new one to Bayonne.

I agree with most of the comments. This is a very big ship and there were a few issuess, but for the most part it never seemed crowded. The food was good, however, the last 3 days they ran out of half & half, how do you run out of half & half???

They also ran out of chocolate milk. I am sure this was related to the extremely large number of kids on-board. Yes, I also agree, the food was very good.

Ok, not that this would be an issue, but can someone explain the "do not flush while sitting" comment?

Large intestines are designed to remain internal.

Yes, that was my number 8 Lesson...

One thing I forgot to add was they served frozen Yogurt on deck and not soft ice cream. That was disappointing. When I asked about it the first day, I was told that they rotated daily. But that never happened. It was frozen Yogurt every day. There was no place to get ice cream except at the sit down dinning room or at dinner. Oh yeah, you could buy it at Ben and Jerry's. Most people have some vices and mine is Ice Cream. No big deal for others.

Captain, when you mentioned being charged for not returning towels; are you talking about the cabin towels or the pool towels?

Pool towels...

We brought our own beach towels with us, so we did not have to bother with checking out and waiting in line to check in the pool towels.
