Default Royal Caribbean's New Smoking Policy

This is effective Jan. 1/14.

Q: What is the Smoking Policy onboard?

A: For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests do smoke. Therefore, to provide an onboard environment that also satisfies smokers, we have designated certain areas of the ship as smoking areas.

Cigarette, cigar, e-cigarette and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the starboard side of all ships; with the exception of Oasis-class ships that will allow smoking on the port side of the ships. To assist in locating areas where smoking is permitted, guests will find visible signage posted within all smoking areas and ashtrays that are provided for use. Outdoor areas near restricted areas, food venues, and kids play areas and pools will not allow smoking. On Oasisclass, smoking is not permitted in Central Park or the Boardwalk neighborhoods.

Casino Royale allows smoking and has a designated area for non-smoking guests. There will be visible signage indicating the non-smoking area in the casino. There are select cruises departing from China that will not have a non-smoking area in the casino.

Onboard all interior public spaces are smoke free*. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, theater, bar, lounge, hallway, elevator, and jogging track.

Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom and any stateroom balcony. This applies to all stateroom categories onboard. If a guest is in violation of this stateroom policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPassŪ account and may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy.

Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. Cigar and pipe tobacco is limited to designated outdoor areas and Cigar Bars**. You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are only permitted within the designated smoking areas.

Royal Caribbean International kindly asks all guests to please observe the smoking policy. These requests are made to provide a comfortable cruise for everyone. Guest may also inquire at Guest Services for the location of the designated smoking areas onboard.

Guests who violate this smoking policy may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of this Guest Conduct Policy.

Royal Caribbean updated the smoking policy July 2013 and the above policy is in enforcement on all ships with cruises departing on or after January 1, 2014.

*Mariner of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas offer one indoor smoking venue. Onboard Mariner of the Seas guest can smoke at the Connoisseur Club located on Deck 5. Onboard Voyager of the Seas guest can smoke at The Vault, nightclub, located on Deck 3.

**Cigar Bars on Royal Caribbean International are called the Connoisseur Club and are featured on the Freedom Class and Voyager Class ships.

We sailed on Navigator in the western Med and 11 of the 15 bars onboard were smoking, and in one bar where we wanted to watch Karaoke, they had smoking on one side and 'non smoking' on the other side... it was pretty horrible.. Even the main promenade stunk of smoke from the Pub.
When I wrote to them after to find what was their official policy on smoking, I was told it was a flexible rule, according to the demographic on board at the time... I'd never sail there again until it is changed.

Felix - did you change it to the new policy?

No smoking on balconies? Will they enforce it?

If you are out on your balcony and smell smoke .... and complain .... just how would royal figure out where it is coming from?

Someone, somewhere had suggested making port smoking and starboard non-smoking (or vice-versa). I see that as a solution that makes everyone happy.

Making one side smoking and the other not won't work from the companies point of view. I really don't think they would sell enough on the smoking side and then you would get non-smokers complaining because they are forced to book on the smoking side.

I assume as on other lines, you would have to call security or the front desk to complain. The problem will be - will they send someone soon enough to "catch" the culprit. I don't know how much the room stewards will help as their gratuities are depending on the cruiser and if they blow the cruiser in, good bye gratuities.

A camera taking a picture around the divider might work.

As for in Europe, Europeans smoke so much more than North Americans and I don't see the rules being the same because of it.

For the cruises out of Asia, there will be not be any no-smoking rules. The Asians are big time smokers and will not be giving that up anytime soon.

I thought I posted the new policy. I'll re-check that.

some people are allowed to smoke and some are not.its a choice of life. if you dont like people smoking then go on a total non smoking ship if u can find one. people pay an awful lot of money to go on a cruise so why should you complain about others who enjoy a smoke when they have paid the same or money for the cruise than you have

So if I fly on a plane with you and paid the same amount of money for my seat, I'm allowed to smoke and damage your health because I paid to be there as well.
Don't think money buys you the right to damage my lungs and health.

you are not allowed to smoke on a plane.and you are only on a plane for a certain amount of hours to get you from one destination to another quickly.so perhaps you should get your priorities right. when you pay a lot of money to go on a cruise your paying for a holiday to relax and enjoy yourself whether it be for 7 or 14 days or longer .obviously by your posts on this site you have an aversion to smokers perhaps because you have either smoked in the past or have lost someone because of their smoking habit.you can change the argument around as much as you wish but everyone is entitled to do what they wish to do with their lives as long as they do not force their habits on others. this entails freedom within reason to do as they please. without you finding every excuse to moan about people who smoke. look foreward to your next reply

You can smell smoke though even though it may not be your immediate neighbour.

Maybe they will put smoke detectors on the balcony.

hehe That would be great but I can see a constant ringing of smoke detectors going off.

They will have to enforce their own rules as of Jan. 1/14 but I suppose it will take a bit of time for people to get used to it.

Well I guess I'll be booking my future cruises on the non smoking side of the ship. I believe the question was asked, what happens when the non smoking side sales out and someone is forced to book a cabin on the smoking side. This will pose a problem.

Just received this email from Royal Caribbean referencing the smoking policy.

Dear Friend,

In consideration of ongoing guest feedback and evolving industry standards, Royal Caribbean International is revising its onboard smoking policy, effective for all sailings departing on or after January 1, 2014.

Under this new policy, all indoor public spaces will be smoke free, with the exception of the Casino and the Connoisseur Club on Freedom and Voyager Class ships and one designated smoking venue on ships sailing from Chinese homeports. In the Casino, there will be designated smoking and non-smoking areas.

Additionally, smoking will not be permitted in the staterooms or on stateroom balconies. Outdoor smoking areas will be designated on the starboard side of all ships; with the exception of Oasis-class ships that will allow smoking on the port side of the ships.

Indoor smoking areas permit tobacco cigarettes and electronic cigarettes. Cigars and pipe tobacco can be enjoyed in designated outdoor areas, or in the cigar club on the ships that offer this venue.

Please consult our Smoking Policy FAQ for more details.

Royal Caribbean International is committed to continually enhancing the guest vacation experience. To find smoking venues and areas while onboard, please consult your Cruise Compass, or visit Guest Services, where we will be happy to assist you.

Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you aboard soon

Dear Friend,

It's nice how they addressed the email as Dear Friend, and not Dear Cruiser or something else...... I did not get my Dear Friend email yet.....

How about a completely smoke-free Royal ship?

TM,

A completely smoke free ship would be great, but I don't think that is likely any time soon. I do wish the casino would be smoke free, the smoke in there really bothers me and I enjoy spending time there. A smoke free area is not smoke free.

I spend very little time in the casino because of the smoke.

I second that. I don't mind walking through a smoking section to get to a non-smoking section. But I've walked away from more than one winning streak at a table, because someone was sitting at the table and smoking.

They make non-smoking tables/sections work in Vegas.

The smoke burns my eyes and irritates my throat.

Casinos on Royal are large enough to make non-smoking sections work. HAL with their small casinos are the worst.

I was pleased to see that RCI were not going to allow smoking on balconies but was unaware of the change to smoking in the casino which is now allowed. That was not publicised.
Most of Deck 4 and some of Deck 5 smelt of smoke not to mention the port sides of deck and most deck 11 and it completely ruined our holiday.
I've been on the the same ship twice before (independence) and it was great. This last time I couldn't wait to get off, it was awful. Last time with RCI for us I'm afraid if gambling revenue is considered more important than the health of their "customers"
