Well I guess the title tells half the story, the 5 concerned here are
The crisis co-ordinator for Costa Crociere, Roberto Ferranini, who could serve two years and 10 months. The ship's hotel director who was sentenced to two and a half years. Plus two bridge officers and a helmsman who were given suspended sentences from between one year eight months to one year 11 months. Meanwhile the Captain, Francesco Schettino, has asked for tests to be carried out on the cruise liner's wreckage to determine why electrical and other systems failed. Looks like his lawyers are exploring every avenue to prevent blame resting with him.

I am disappointed they postponed the Captain's trial till September. He is the one who needs to face his responsibility, with a much longer prison sentence. I hope the ship is gone soon..this will be the final reminder of a horrible night, and the death of many. A sad chapter in maritime history.

You can get the most accurate updates on the Concordia salvage project at this website, which is provided by the company doing the removal of the hulk.
The 'captain' won a delay so they could have electrical tests performed on the ship? How are they going to accomplish that? They can't do it with the ship in it's current location, and I wonder what they would test anyway since all the systems have been largely underwater for 18 months. I have little doubt he is praying the project fails and the Concordia sinks in deep water - less evidence that way. Meanwhile the Italian legal system continues to be a dysfunctional mess. There was a lawyers strike recently that delayed the trials. Lawyers strike???

We were on a train from Livorno to Pisa in 1983. The crew had some sort of disagreement and went on strike and stopped the train on a siding. We sat there for about 30 minutes and they were standing outside arguing with who appeared to be the conductor. After much hand gesturing they got back aboard and off we went again to Pisa. It was an interesting contrast to the old story about Mussolini being a tyrant but at least he got the trains to run on time.
