Default Why Holland America?

I was wondering, why do you choose to sail Holland America over all the other choices out there? We are Holland fans, but have also tried others, and will probably continue to try others, but what is it that keeps you coming back?

We've traveled more nights on Holland America than any other cruise line. Not by choice, but by the fact all the cruises we've taken with them have been longer cruises - the shortest being 10 nights.

The main reason we go with them is that they cater to an older demographics, so it's not a party atmosphere like you find on some other cruise lines. We don't need the rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks, and water slides. Now that we're in our 60's, we've found that we prefer a more sedate and laid back environment. We also love good food, nice ship, and comfortable accommodations. They also offer some very nice itineraries in different parts of the world. Their older ships are classic, with lots of wood and brass, so we really enjoy those. The newer ships are nice, but lack some of that classic feel. Haven't been on the Koningsdam, yet, but would like to see what they're providing on their newest ship.

We really like Celebrity, alot, as their newest ships are very nice and their food is very good. Problem is, their prices are higher than Holland, so that's often a deciding factor for us. We tried Oceania, but given everything they have to offer, we definitely could not justify the high cost, especially since we did not feel their food was 'the finest cuisine at sea', as they advertise.

Younger people and families normally find Holland America on the boring side, but that's what draws us to them. Plus, they offer some wonderful tours to go along with their cruises, especially in Alaska.

So, like you, we love to try other cruise lines, but everyone has their 'comfort' level and ours is with Holland America.

Pete

I don't keep going back, although I did enjoy many aspects of HAL...on our last cruise, our friends and I called it a ghost ship.....the nights were dead....everybody must have gone to bed..."I need a livelier ship, and I'm not a real party person... I don't want to roll the dice for it....

My first cruise was on HAL, recommended by my brother. Our two married children and their spouses were with us, and we all had a great time, so my second and third were also with HAL. I like their moderately-sized ships. I have since tried Norwegian (yuck!), Princess (crowds everywhere), Celebrity (like it, a lot), MSC (cheap and interesting), and Carnival (much better than I had expected). I now tend to choose by when and what I can find a cabin mate for.

Pete, (StoryBookCruises.com) I have to say I agree with all you said. It seems as we get older we appreciate the more laid back, more mature cruise style as well.
Linda, I did not find HAL as much of a "ghost ship" at night as I did on Celebrity. Those guest definitely go to bed after dinner!
I have had a lot of fun on Carnival and Norwegian, but I found the constant noise and loud music grating after awhile. think we'll stick to HAL!

Things vary on ships, depending on how they book..the Zuiderdam was a ghost ship, while we were busy bees on another...go figure...lol
