Default NCL Crew Training

So I am new person to working on ships, have submitted all my PEME and am just waiting for the final word from NCL. I've spent years researching this work field, have talked with some former workers and know about living conditions, working hours and general expectations. Anyway, onto my question which is regards to crew training with NCL - I am a Canadian that got hired as a stage tech.

Now my biggest issue is that I can't swim... but am not necessarily afraid of water and intend on taking swimming lessons at some point. I just wanted to know if NCL (I know NCLA does) has any training that would involve me being in water. How much of crew in general don't know how to swim?

Some techs I know that have worked with RCCL said swimming isn't required and one of them told me a story of how one of the crew was 'deathly afraid of water'. I also know that other cruise lines such as DCL have their STCW training but I have no idea as to what NCL does.

Hi,

Training at RCCL involved various activities in a pool where you needed to swim at least a little bit.

Appreciate many of us have aversions to certain things but you should learn to swim, not for the sake of making sure you pass your training, but for your own safety. One day your life may depend on it!

Dont assume that because ships sink only occasionally, that its not likely to happen to you, it could be your ship.

Also you will have to participate in lifeboat drills from time to time, I know of a number of occasions where these have fallen into the water, if you are lucky enough to fall and survive, do you want to then drown because you cant swim.

There are other scenarios where you could fall in the water, and I know that it has happened to crew. Cruise ships are generally safe places but things can go wrong.

So what happened? Did you go to training? What was it like? I've been taking swimming lessons and still learning.
