Default Alaska here I come!

Woohoo!

I just booked an Alaskan Cruise for May! My dad surprised me and said he wanted to go to Alaska w/ me and based on my love of cruises he said a cruise would be a great way to do it!

I am so excited! I think I am driving him NUTZ with my excited phone calls about prices etc!

Now to book the airfare! Though I am very surprised that its not as expensive as I thought it would be!

Anyway had to share my exciting news! Now I will need LOTS of advice from those of you who have been! All suggestions are welcome!

Take care
Ashley

My favorite excursion in Alaska was the dog sled in Skagway, I really loved it. Are you leaving out of Seattle? What are your ports? Here is video of the dog sled.

All RIGHT! You will have a wonderful time! My DH and I booked an Alaskan cruise last August, on the spur of the moment! We had talked about it for years and finally had enough of the Gulf Coast heat and did it.

There are so many shore excursions to choose from. If your father is a fan of The Deadliest Catch (on TV) there is an excursion on the Alaskan Ballad. It was real informative and 'up close and personal'.

The mountains and glaciers are breathtaking! Have a wonderful time with your Dad!

Thank you all so much for your replies!

I am soo excited and I am very proud of my father for wanting to do this. He can be a bit on the homebody side. I almost cried when he told me applied for his 1st passport yesterday! Since my mom passed away a few years it has been interesting to see dad come out of his shell!

I am a bit nervous since I am a 30 yr old female traveling with my 69 yr old dad but this will be good for us! I hope there will be some people for me to hang out with hoping some of the roll calls become more active!

We are doing the Southbound trip on the Spirit out of Anchorage heading to Vancouver leaving May 20th. Our stops are Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.

Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble! Again all suggestions are welcome!

Take Care
Ashley

Please read my article on Juneau before you go - there are some great things to see in the city:

http://www.cruisemates.com/articles/...ure-090308.cfm

You can do dog-sledding, whale-watching, bear-watching, fly over a glacier, etc.

BTW: Spirit is consistenly one of the best values going to Alaska. Good choice of ships.

Doing the southbound in May, it can be very chilly at the start of the cruise, then get quite warm as you move down the coast, so take layers. One must have is a waterproof windbreaker.
Alaska is my all time favorite destination. And you will forever cherish having this time with your dad. He probably would never have done it without you. You will meet plenty of people on board. Don't worry about on line roll call. I have met maybe one person per cruise that way, at most. Most people sadly don't know about this website (in spite of my persistent promotion of it to everyone I know ).
Congrats!

Try the trip by train over the pass out of Skagway thru a small part of B.C. to the Yukon. Great stuff. And in Juneau - don't forget the Red Dog Saloon !

I did both of those also, and I highly recomend them. I liked the the train pass so much and would love to do it again.

Enjoy your cruise.

Ashley - I read your dad came out of his shell when your mom died. The same thing happened to me! When my mom passed away, we MADE dad start living (he was miserable) and took him on about 6 cruises before he passed away himself. Don't worry about being 30 and traveling with a 69year old. You both will have a wonderful time! Dad never made it to Alaska, and that was one of 2 states he had never been to. My last trip to alaska in 2005, I took dads cap, kissed it and threw it off the balcony (don't tell..lol) so a part of him can be in Alaska. Cherish this time with him. Spend what time you can and enjoy! You can go your separate ways on the ship too - depending on how active he is. Each can have their quality time. We went on the whitepass railway, whale watch, etc on our last cruise. This year, because I have lost enough weight, we plan on doing a helicoptor flight to a glacier to walk, AND dog sled. Keep in touch and let us all know the excursions you decide on!

Ashley,
Enjoy the cruise to Alaska. It is my favorite. Yes the Carribean cruises are great. I am leaving in 3 days on one. With that said, nothing can compare with the sights you will see in Alaska. The Master some of his best work when making this place.

Go for the fun of it and enjoy your time with Dad. I am sure he will enjoy it also. Just take the time to look around at the mountains, water, wildlife and take it all in. You will cherish this trip with Dad.

Just some thought of things to do.

Shopping in Ketchican: Walk to Creek Street. Different little shops along the creek. The Salmon might be running also.

Juneau: We did the Whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier. Take the time just to look around as you are in the bay watching for whales. The views are great.

Skagway: White Pass Railroad is great. There will be lots of snow and many picture opportunities.

The Red Dog Saloon in Juneau and the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway are neat places to eat. The prices are not bad if you stay away from the alcohol.

If you would like an adventure get on one of the float planes in port and fly inland over the glaciers. We did this in Anchorage because we had a late flight home. It was worth every penny.

Way to go Ashley !! 8)
I've done Alaska twice myself. To me Alaska is the best cruise destination. My favorite shore excursions and sites are.....
Juneau: Meldenhall Glacier, Mount Roberts. Also dis a nature hike
Skagway: White Pass Railroad
Sitka: Russian Dancers, Raptor Center, "Cathedral", Bishop's house
Ketchikan: Misty Fjords National Monument

Thanks everyone! All of the suggestions have been great.

I came home for Christmas on Tuesday night and dad and I have started working on our plans. For part of his Christmas gift I gave him a nice fleece jacket and 2 books on cruising in Alaska. He has been reading them all day (I read them after I bought them before I handed them over).

Question for you Alaska veterans sailing out of Whittier. How did you get from Anchorage to Whitter? Has anyone tried renting a car? Avis had one way rentals and since we didn't leave Whittier until 9pm thought it might be a good way to see some of the area and it seemed to be a straight shot b/t the 2 points. Also what time would we have to be at the ship for a 9pm departure?

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas (or other holiday day) with loved ones!

Take Care
Ashley

Ashley - I plan on taking a train from Whittier to the cruise terminal. I havn't checked on it yet, but my TA sent me some links. Here they are:
You can book the bus transfer through the cruiseline between Anchorage and Whittier. Carnival doesnt sell the train but you can try this.

Carnival doesn't offer a bus from the airport to dockside? Even if I don't take their air, I can still reserve a seat on their airport shuttle.

Carnival does offer a shuttle from the airport as as well as from the downtown area. Just wanting to explore all options.

Ashley, I am so glad to hear that you are taking time and spenting it with you father....you will never forget this. As for people your father age on the ship? There will be plenty. I am 62 female and I always meet people my age and older.
Hope your dad has a great time and comes back a little younger and spirt lifted to go on with his life. But do expect him to be a little sad now and then that moms not there with him, but she is!

Good Luck and have a Great Time

You and your dad will have a great time. In spite of the greatly increased cruise traffic to Alaska it is still a great cruise. Relax and take time to take in all the great sights.
