Curious: Anyone encountered racism on a cruise?

On every cruise that Rob and I have been on for either Royal Caribbean or Celebrity, they have always had Friday night services. Once, during Chanukah, Royal Caribbean gave a big Chanukah party including latkas, coins, dreidels, challah and wine. It just so happened that a cantor was aboard the ship. It would be very inappropriate for a cruise director to even say "we don't do Jewish". Cruise directors come up "through the ranks" and in their training, they are taught to be "sensitive" to all races and religions.

In this case he did say it .My wife and the friends we traveled with heard the CD say it to a Rabbi .

This occured in December 2010 . In July 2012 my wife and I were on a ship from the same cruise line and the guy was a CD on the ship(not the same ship as 2010) .

We found the guy to be very nice and he was very receptive to a Sabbath service . My thinking is that he was spoken to in 2010 by someone above him .

His statement was made to a Rabbi from Boca Raton ,Fl . My wife and I +2 other couples heard the CD distinctly .

The words "We don't do Jewish" in writing probably sound far worse than in real life... They could definitely be taken out of context. I don't think people should make judgement calls unless they actually witnessed the event.

Example, someone walks up to the CD and asks,

Guest: "I see you have religious observances onboard, do you do both Christian and Jewish?"

CD: "We only do the Christian service, I'm sorry."

Guest: "I beg your pardon, I couldn't quite hear if you do a Jewish service?"

CD: "We don't do Jewish."

I did witness the conversation .I've stated that twice . I do not think you will allow me to post the name of the CD and the name of the ship .
My wife and I and the 2 couples we were traveling with were coming out of the ships theater one evening . Walking ahead of us directly was the CD .He was approached from the other side by a Rabbi and members of his congregation .The Rabbi asked if they can have a religious service on Friday early evening and the CD said "We do not do Jewish."

A woman that I know told me that in 2007 she was sexually harassed by the CD on a cruise she was on ,that Paul,is hearsay .

It is sad that the question asked in this thread is relevant.

Unfortunately too many people are biased and you are bound to find some of them on cruise ships.

Hi. I appreciate the OP question from years ago and the opportunity to respond.

Having been on the receiving end of racsim by passengers on Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas (lovely ship - great crew), I feel your pain when you know for sure that insensitivity was shown by someone who you thought should know better protocol but didn't.

You might wonder why I cruise. Well, if I let hateful people stop me from pursuing my goals in life, I would never get anywhere or train the next generation that people who look like me exist.

We have a long way to go to reach the idealistic world of Star Trek were life in all its forms is valued.

I hope you cruised more and continued to ask the question. I wish someone would invite me to a Sabbath service. I would like to experience one in my lifetime. A ship would be a neutral place. Is that racist?

If you want to go to a Sabbath service ,go to a synagogue ,there are many in Austin .

I have been to services in Baptist churches ,Seventh Day Adventist ,Catholic and many other religions.

So, we have to dig up posts that are 11 & 1 / 2 years old to try to stir up something? Surely someone must have had to look through many,. many old posts to find one 11 & 1 /2 years old to try to stir up something.
After well over 40 cruises, I've never seen racism nor felt like anyone was treating me in a racist way.
But then, I don't go around looking for something to make a big issue out of.
Surely the person who brought this out of the graveyard must have had to go through hundreds, if not more, old posts to find the one they wanted to use to try to stir the pot.
If I were that desperate, I think I'd get a good book and put my time to better use.

In my experience in the last 7 years the vast majority of people who ever even refer to racial issues come from the left - and (NEWS flash....) racism is racism by definition whether it is malicious or not.

I was watching the Sunday interview shows today and only ONE even mentioned Ben Carson, the #2 republican contender who is very black and very intelligent and qualified. All they wanted to talk about was Trump - as if he has already locked in the nomination.

Why not talk about who would be the nominee if Trump fizzled out - because all those people who have been hearing "dog whistles" for the last 7 years would have apologize to all republicans - and that would be very embarrassing.

So - racism does exist, on cruise ships and elsewhere. The point is that all raceism is not as it appears. Sometimes it is misconstrued, or merely used as a straw man wedge issue to divide people

Did this post cause you to lose money selling cruises? If so, I don't mind deleting it.

I know for a fact that Royal Caribean Navigator of the Seas made a shipwide announcement in 2015 that Sabbath services were being held. It is good to know that I would be welcomed to a Sabbath service in Austin. Because recently a death occurred from a stranger visiting a church in the South, I questioned if an obvious outside would be admitted or welcomed, but that is for another forum on a different site.

Most, if not all, racism on ships among crew do not appear to the guests. Passengers would never know or notice. It happens BEHIND the scene and from the head offices of the cruise line. Very sad in today's day and age.
