To me, the higher cost for Royal is justified by the beauty of their ships and the myriad of activities that are available. I say this, however, with very little cruise experience. Our cruise on Serenade of the Seas was marvelous and after such an experience, there is a tendency to stick with the brand in fear of having a lesser experience with another line. Maybe with a few more cruises under our belts, we will diversify, but with the infrequency mandated by our budget, we are playing it safe, even if it is a bit more.

Another factor in the decline of sales is the change from “included” to “optional at a moderate cost” as it relates to traditional cruise activities. When budgets are tight, the fear of having to much extra spend once on the ship may keep people at home. There is a need to accurately determine a budget and stick to it. Cruising (for the mass market lines anyway) has never been truly all inclusive, but there is a perception (especially with Royal Caribbean) that it is becoming too easy to nickel and dime your way into a tight spot.

Despite all that we intend to be back on board…it just may be a bit longer before we feel comfortable spending such significant dollars on a vacation.
