Default RCI no more in cabin cocktails

It appears that the company that runs the duty free shops onboard RCI has decided to discontinue the practice of allowing people to pay the $9.50 "consumption fee" to take the purchase to cabin for use, beginning in August 05. I guess RCI wants to force everyone to go to the bars for all liquor purchases.... so far, RCI is claiming ignorance on the subject, so it remains to be seen whether they will provide an alternative for it's guests. Hopefully they will include liquor on the room service menu or add it to the gift selection like Princess does. Failing that, they seem to be giving guests no alternative but to add to the "smuggling" practices.....Let's put some presure on RCI... shall we?

I doubt that the duty free shops came up with this $9.50 charge as a "consumption tax" the same as I am sure they are not the ones discontinuing it.

I AM sure they were instructed by RCI that that they no longer wish to offer this as an option as it is even more profitable to make the passengers pay the going rates in the bars.

When will pure greed stop?

Cheers,
Peter

Is it possible that drunken parties in the cabins with passengers being thrown off or falling off balconies have anything to do with it?

Do you know if RCI caters insuite parties? My son hosted a cocktail party in his suite on the Explorer and RCI did a wonderful job. The champagne, hors d'doeuvre's, cheeses from around the world were the best.

Happy Partying!

Go to a baseball or football game they don't let you bring your own alchol in the stadium.

Let's put some presure on RCI... shall we? No I agree with the policy they are in business to make money DUH.

Are you actually trying to compare a floating hotel to a sports stadium?

DUH!

But then again I don't agree with the sports stadium restriction either, but drunk sports nuts have a tendancy to throw things at the opposing teams and fans. I sure wouldn't like to get hit with a flying bottle.

I suppose it wouldn't be worth saying that if the fans attending the sports events refused to buy any of the overpriced snacks and drinks, the prices would soon tumble.

But hey someone has to pay the sports heros thier mega salaries, just glad it isn't me ousoonerfanintexas.

Cheers,
Peter

Yes

It is really all the same they are in business to make money. When I lived in Las Vegas you could get a Budweiser for .75 went to Albuquerque it was 2.25 in Texas in a bar it is 3.00. It comes down to if you don't like the rules don't play in the game.

But hey someone has to pay the sports heros thier mega salaries.

Well if you want a winning team you have to pay the price. Remember when Chicago Bulls had Michael, Scotty and a few others people would pay top dollar to go to a game. Then they missed the playoffs for 5 years and from what people told me the Bulls couldn't give the tickets away.

Not to many people will pay top dollar to watch a team loose.

As far as I know Carnival has never allowed this. Nor did Celebrity. So what's the big deal? Sneak the booze in like everyone else does in your checked luggage!

I haven't been in here in a while but now I got to say something. It seems like what people in here are saying is it is o.k. to cheat the cruiseline. What I wonder is if any of you own your own business is it o.k. for people to cheat you?

Well, yes they do, as you just stated re your sons experience on Explorer. What do we have? A question from Carol, with provided supporting evidence provised by same, so what was the question or the point apart from highlighting your sons "party"

or have I missed something?

DavidB,

I don't think you missed anything.

I believe that Carol was asking this: If you can no longer buy liquor and bring it to your suite, can you still have it delivered for a private party? Her son obviously had his party before the new rule went into effect on August 5.

At least that's the way I read it!

Cheating the cruiselines, how are we doing that? I think the term is restricting their profit levels.

Just for the sake of it, I wouldn't pay any money to see either a winning or a losing team.

Anyone ever notice that ousoonerfanintexas and Donald White Jr seem to post from the same place?

I would not call it a "consumption fee" You are just paying regular price like at the liqour store at home. You get to buy it for less "duty free" if you bring it home.

No, it is not like bringing your own booze into a stadium. It is exactly like bringing booze into your hotel room and I have never heard of that not being allowed. I am sorry to see them go this route because I always buy some vodka for my cabin. If this is the case, I will bring it with me.

wow PeterV, I wonder why people feel the need to do stuff like that.....

Anyway, did you go look all that up or did you run a search algorithm by re-routing secondary back up power directly thru the main deflector dish relay in junction 17 deck 9 jeffries tube??

Peter you must not have much of a life why don't you seach some more I am sure you can find others that have posted from the same ISP and by the way sat.res.rr.com and sat.rr.com are two different ISP genius and Donald and I are two different people.

my 2 cents:

it is possible for one person to post from 3 locations, ie. work, home, and girlfriend's house

however, it is highly unlikely that 2 people post from the SAME 3 locations, unless of course you have the same provider at home, same at work, and you're both sleeping with the same girlfriend?!?!

OK,
Let''s get back on topic and forget about playing IP tracers. If I decided to dump all the people who post or have posted under alias names there would be a lot less people on the boards. It is only done when it is at a point of disruption.

Mike

Darn, how can I post anonymously as DavidB? Now that would be fun.

But back to the original post:

I suspect one attractive offering of RCI to a segment of the cruising population was the in room consumption feature. Do you think some people chose to cruise on their ships because they could bring a bottle to their room? I think so.

Do you think RCI has made the decision callously to disallow this in the future? I doubt it. Do you think lawsuits from people falling off ships may have contributed to their decision?

It's funny, PeterV debated with me a while back about cruise ships not having alcohol insurance because he said nobody is drinking and driving anywhere therefore they don't need it. Hmmmm............................

Regards,
Thomas

I still stand by my comments Thomas. It is purely a profit issue, that one bottle can sell for a lot more in individual drinks than they can by selling the bottle.

Cheers,
Peter

SO let me get this right.

I would not want to miss the point.

The gripe is that you cannot sit in a 174 sq ft area, on a bed or on a small uncomfortable chair and drink since they are now forcing you to drink in a 78,000+ ton ship with the salt breeze, or a band, or a string quartet or a vocalist singing.

OK, what is the gripe?

This was one of the things I like about RCI. If they now don't allow you to buy a bottle and take it to you cabin, I will be quite disappointed. I have been on 12 cruises and never got so drunk I fell overboard. I have gotten so drunk I puked, but never fell overboard.
