CANYON RANCH, Land and Sea, an IMMERSION DESTINATION - Part 4

| Tuesday, 05 Mar. 2013

The story behind Canyon Ranch embodies the evolution of the health and fitness industry in this country.

A Week at Canyon Ranch in Tucson (Continued) The cost for an individual, all-inclusive, 7-day stay at Canyon Ranch: $7,470.00. If your room is double occupancy the cost is $6,170.00 per person. Tips are not expected or required due to the overall level of employee compensation. Don't forget vouchers up to $1200.00 for services of your choice.

Now let's explore and compare the SpaClub Canyon Ranch experience aboard the Queen Mary 2. If it's a transatlantic voyage you are taking aboard this beautiful, historic ocean liner, then your immersion experience is the Atlantic Ocean, not the Southwest Desert; quite a contrast. You will not be able to hike in beautiful mountains and canyons or observe an abundance of wildlife over the 150-acre Tucson Ranch. However you will be sailing from South Hampton, England to New York City (one itinerary) aboard a 148,000-ton ocean liner that is home to 2600 passengers and 1300 crew for your weeklong cruise. The ship itself offers an abundance of activities, enrichment classes, and entertainment.

You will not have the extensive spa facilities (80,000 square feet) like at Canyon Ranch, but you may be surprised that the spa on QM 2 is 20,000 square feet and offers almost every kind of treatment you would find at Canyon Ranch. In 24 massage, skincare and body treatment rooms you can experience mud, aromatherapy, ayurvedic and seaweed treatments, body scrubs and rejuvenating body cocoons just to name a few.

Some of their onboard signature services include Rasul Ceremony (an ancient mud and steam treatment), Mango Sugar Glo scrub, Stone Massage, and Sea-Esta. Also within the spa you will find the fitness center, luxurious men and women's locker rooms, and The Aqua Therapy Center complete with whirlpools, saunas, steam room, sensory showers and reflexology basin, coed relaxation lounge, beauty salon, juice bar and Living Essentials Boutique. Their qualified staff offers acupuncture and nutrition counseling. The SpaClub carries all of the specialty skin care treatments exclusive to Canyon Ranch. It is open 8 am to 8 p.m.

So what about exercise? You are aboard a ship in the middle of the ocean. The fitness center is open from 6:00 am to 8:00 p.m. offering 50 top-of-the-line cardio and weight-training pieces of equipment that equals the best in any land-based facility. They offer fitness assessment, customized training and weight loss programs, personal training sessions, blood pressure and related training, and body composition analysis. These programs have a nominal fee but free classes are offered from 7:00 am until 5:00 p.m. most days. These classes include: Yoga, Indoor Cycling, Pilates, Step & Sculpt, ABS Express, T.N.T. (tighten and tone), Sit and Be Fit, Stretching, Cardio, and more.

Enrichment classes? Here are a few educational classes we enjoyed on our seven-day cruise; ship-lore, art restoration, New York City architecture, science and computer classes. Queen Mary 2 boasts the largest library at sea, 8000 books. RADA, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts offers workshops, the Royal Court Theater offers classical concerts, and you have the usual dance classes, bingo, arts and crafts, and art auctions. Queen Mary 2 has afternoon tea every day, complete with tuxedoed waiters in white gloves, and stylish ballroom events several of the evenings.

One of the most exciting things onboard is a theater called Illuminations. This is the site of most of the onboard enrichment lectures, or perhaps a movie, but at a certain time each day this theater becomes a Planetarium. You lie back with a 180-degree screen and see a show rivaling any land-based planetarium. Four different shows are offered with titles like, "Cosmic Collisions". These shows are all free but because of limited seating, tickets must be picked up in advance.

The ship's dining room menus always offer a Canyon Ranch SpaClub choice, and aboard QM 2 food is always available with 24-hour room service. Canyon Ranch also provides guests with 24-hour access to nutritious snacks like fresh fruit, homemade granola bars, cheese, and cinnamon-coated pumpkin seeds with dried cranberries.

High quality entertainment production shows, the casino, and a multitude of music and dancing venues are open nightly, or you might choose to just gaze at the horizon by day or the stars at night from any of the outdoor decks.

What is not available to you on Queen Mary 2 but in abundance at Canyon Ranch are health and wellness treatment sessions from board-certified physicians. If you have an emergency or get sick, there are physicians aboard to take care of you. The spa does offer acupuncture, but you won't find hypnotherapy sessions or other holistic approaches to wellness.

The cost of a seven-day transatlantic cruise aboard the Queen Mary 2 in a basic balcony cabin: $2135.00 per person based on double occupancy. This is a significant discount, however keep in mind your international air travel expense, your travel to the ship, (Canyon Ranch Tucson will pick you up from the airport), and all spa treatments are charged individually in addition to your cruise fare with no $1200.00 credit voucher. Tipping of your service people, in and outside of the spa, is also always expected on a cruise ship.

Canyon Ranch is a life enhancement company with many honors and awards in its almost 30-year history. Here are just a few:

10-time winner of the Conde Nast Traveler Best Destination Spa Award. Favorite U.S. Spa -- Celebrated Living magazine. Healthiest Spa in America -- Health magazine. Best Spa Brand -- Luxury Spa-Finder magazine.

The fact that Canyon Ranch has been able to extend its brand internationally through SpaClub onboard the QM 2 is quite remarkable. So whether you want the southwest desert experience or a grand voyage as you sail across the ocean, you can count on the unique and exceptional experience that Canyon Ranch promises its patrons thanks to the vision and dedication of its founder Mel Zuckerman.
