Carnival Triumph to Get FunShip Upgrades

Triumph will receive Guy's Burgers, RedFrog Rumbar, EA Sports Bar, Alchemy Bar and Blue Tequila

The ship now more commonly known as the "poop ship" than by its real name has been laid up in Mobile Alabama, the port to which it was towed after four days at sea with no power. The ship has been laid up there since February 15th for cleaning, refurbishment and enough work on its engines and generators to allow the ship to travel under its own power.

But while Carnival had been planning to make the final repairs to Triumph in a bigger and more fully equipped dry dock facility in the Bahamas all along - Carnival has now announced that it will extend its time in the dry-dock to give Triumph a number of onboard upgrades as part of the fleetwide "FunShip 2.0" program that Carnival has already rolled out to several other ships in the fleet.

Carnival Triumph departed Mobile, Ala., on May 8th under its own power bound and is expected to arrive at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas on Saturday, May 11. There it will receive the final repairs on the power generation system, including new and additional emergency generators.

But Carnival also now plans to add the following Fun Ship 2.0 onboard enhancements for future guests:

  • Guy's Burger Joint, a complimentary poolside venue serving fresh-made burgers and hand-cut fries created by Food Network personality and chef Guy Fieri.

  • BlueIguana Cantina, a free-of-charge Mexican cantina with custom-made tacos and burritos that can be personalized by diners at an extensive salsa and toppings bar.

  • Alchemy Bar, a cocktail "pharmacy" where highly trained mixologists create custom cocktails using interesting flavors and ingredients.

  • EA SPORTS Bar, an interactive sports-themed lounge where patrons can view live action, play popular EA SPORTS video games and keep up with the latest scores.

  • RedFrog Rum Bar, a poolside Caribbean-themed watering hole offering a variety of the region's top rums and beers in a laid-back island-infused atmosphere.

  • BlueIguana Tequila Bar, a lively and engaging poolside bar serving frozen cocktails and Mexican beers in a fun and festive environment.

"With the ship temporarily out of service for repairs, we decided to take the opportunity to add a host of new dining and bar venues that are part of our tremendously popular fleetwide Fun Ship 2.0 enhancement program," said Gerry Cahill, president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines.

Following the dry dock, Carnival Triumph is slated to re-enter regular service from Galveston, Texas, June 13, 2013. The ship will sail four-day cruises to Cozumel, Mexico, and five-day cruises to Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico.

Carnival Triumph will have new systems to improve operating reliability and further prevent a potential loss of primary power. There will be an upgrade in fire detection and suppression systems, and, in the rare event of a loss of main power, there will be additional emergency backup power to provide core hotel services to ensure guest comfort.

Fun Ship 2.0 is a $500 million product-enhancement initiative being gradually rolled out across the Carnival fleet.

Interestingly, the first ship in the same class as Carnival Triumph, the former Carnival Destiny, just completed its own extensive FunShip 2.0 upgrades at the same Fincantieri shipyard where the ship was originally built in 1996. That ship is now known as Carnival Sun shine and it just re-entered service this week. While that ship was in dry dock for those upgrades it was decided to give that ship the same engine and power generator upgrades that Triumph is receiving.

Triumph was not scheduled to receive the FunShip 2.0 upgrades until next year, but now when the ship returns to service it will not only be repaired, it will be renovated with many new and exciting fun Carnival features. However, it is not receiving all of the same upgrades as Carnival Sunshine received, such as an expanded Serenity Area, new water slides and new staterooms. Those upgrades are still scheduled to be added at a later date.
