Rock Legends Cruise: Dec 1, 2011
Rock Legends Cruise
I have seen my share or music cruises over the years but the Rock Legends Cruise coming next December has one of the most amazing lineups of bands and musicians I have ever seen. The four-day cruise sails December 1st, 2011 on Liberty of the Seas. This is a full ship charter, and for a ship this size - that alone is an incredible feat - but wait until you see the lineup:
- ZZ Top
- George Thorogood and the Destroyers
- John Kay and Steppenwolf
- The Marshall Tucker Band
- Dickey Betts & Great Southern
- Molly Hatchet
- Johnny Winter
- Edgar Winter
- The Outlaws
- Artimus Pyle
- Pat Travers
- Devon Allman's Honeytribe
- The Chris Hicks Band
- Preacher Stone
- Ryan Balthrop
This four-day cruise sails from Fort Lauderdale to the Royal Caribbean private island at Coco Cay and a stop at Nassau. Because the entire ship is chartered you will not be seeing the usual production shows onboard. Every night will be dedicated to rock 'n roll shows by these amazing artists:
ZZ Top is an American institution with hits like Cheap Sunglasses, Tush, Sharp Dressed Man, Legs and Gimme All Your Lovin'. These guys regularly fill stadiums, so a chance to see them up close in the 1600-seat Liberty Theater is an opportunity no fan should ever miss.
George Thorogood and the Destroyers are famous for hits like Bad to the Bone, while John Kay, the original singer of Steppenwolf, sang the hits Born to Be Wild and Magic carpet Ride. The Marshall Tucker Band created the classic rock hits Can't You See, Fire on the Mountain and Heard it in a Love Song. The great Southern Rock continues with Dickey Betts - original founder of the Allman Brothers Band who sings the hit song Ramblin' Man. Speaking of the Allman Brothers - Devon Allman is the son of Gregg Allman, and his band Honeytribe will also be in the mix.
It isn't any coincidence that many of the players in these bands know each other well. Most of them are from well-known southern rock bands that have been touring and making albums for decades. You can be sure there will be plenty of impromptu jam sessions onboard - a rock 'n roll player's dream.
Speaking of great guitar players - they don't come any more better than Johhny Winter who started playing professionally at age 15 with his 12 year old brother Edgar Winter on keyboards. Both brothers will be onboard this cruise, but with their separate bands. While Johnny remained dedicated to the blues, Edgar moved into more popular music.
The Edgar Winter Band had a number of famous hits. Free Ride is still played on classic rock stations every day nationwide. Then there is Keep Playin' that Rock 'n Roll, Turn on Your Love Light and the instrumental Frankenstein which you will recognize with just the first three notes.
Artimus Pyle was the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd when they created their most famous hits Saturday Night Special and Freebird. He was in the plane crash that killed some of his band mates. He now has a new band.
Foghat is for famous for a few outstanding hit songs such as Fool for the City, Driven Wheel and the well-know hit I Just Wanna Make Love to You. Some of the other players, Pat Travers, Chris Hicks and Ryan Balthrop are all in accomplished bands whose musicianship will add dimension to the cruise. Preacher Stone is the up and coming Southern Rock band that was featured on the Fox television series "Sons of Anarchy."
ZZ Top alone would be enough to make this cruise worthwhile, but add in all of the other great talent and you have the potential for one of the best rock 'n roll meetings of the minds in history. The best thing about rock music cruises is the proximity and access you get to the players themselves. You can literally walk right up to your favorites and introduce yourself. You will see them hanging out in the bars and restaurants and just having a good time.
This is a four day cruise with nothing to worry about except waking up and getting dressed - meals are included. Drinks are sold separately, but you don't have to worry about driving home after the shows.
This cruise is selling out quickly, but take a look at the Rock Legends Cruise web site and book soon if you want the lowest prices. Inside staterooms are already sold out, but balcony staterooms can be had for as little as $1130 per person. That price includes access to all of the shows, jam sessions, private interviews and everything else.
