It is the perfect day in Dover, England today for the first naming of a Carnival Ship in a British Isles port.
The setting was the beautiful, two-deck high pool-deck atrium on Carnival Splendor. This space is a first for any Carnival ship, an outdoor top deck in this case having an upper promenade-type deck surrounding the pool area below, all with the ability for a large magrodome to enclose the entire area in case of inclement weather.
All of the Carnival luminaries were here, just hours ago, including John Heald, the most popular cruise director in the world. The naming ceremony was to be accomplished by British television and singing star, Myleene Klass, assisted by a member of the Royal Navy Divers who climbed a rope from below the waterline, up to the bow of the ship, and smashed a bottle Nyetimber Sparling Wine over the word "Splendor" painted on the side of the ship.
This was a beautiful ceremony. The festivities began with John Heald thanking the performers, welcoming everyone viewing online, and introducing Captain Pagano, the master of the Carnival Splendor. Next John introduced Myleene Klass, who entered the stage to the song "Pretty Woman."
John then spoke about the Royal Navy and explained the significance of using Nyetimber Sparkling Wine, a famous British version of champagne. The vintage they are using is 1994, which is now the line's most sought after and rarest vintage. The drink is the official "champagne" of Buckingham Palace.
John Heald next introduced Carnival President Gerry Cahill, who promised to keep his comments brief as "We are the Fun Ships, after all," he said. He showed video of himself riding the new Flowrider in Grand Turk. After Cahill, and a blessing by the priest, Heald introduced the star of the ceremoney, Myleene Klass.
After a few words, the statuesque Myleene Klass introduced the song "Sailing by Rod Stewart" which she played on the piano while while the Royal Navy Diver, who could be seen on the massive pool-side movie sceen that dominates the pool area, climbed the rope extending down into the water from the rope-deck in the bow of the ship. He climbed the rope, still wearing his mask and fins and broke the Nyetimber bottle, smashing it with one free hand, on the first try.
With the bottle shattering, and the sight of bubbly running down the bow of the ship, the ship's horn blasted and fireworks started going off immediately. The band was playing.
